Melbourne DJs William Kiss, Luke Alessi, and Jordan Brando have come together to form a new trio called “not without friends”. They recently released their debut EP this week via RÜFÜS DU SOL’s Rose Avenue label. The idea of forming the group began during a trip to Thailand’s Phi Phi island where the trio started writing tracks on a laptop and UE Megaboom by the poolside. The final product, a six-tracker, was polished off during a stay in Barcelona.
The final output found on the record weaves percussive, soulful energy and vocals where necessary. Brando sheds light on how their travels came in handy while creating the EP, saying, “A lot of our trips abroad together have definitely come through in the music. Upbeat, happy, and not too serious, which for us is exactly what NWF is about. Whether it’s the sound of a crowded street in Barcelona, the calm wind in Thailand or a washing machine in Ibiza (yep), we’ve tried to sample and incorporate pieces of our travels into all our records.”
Kiss added that “The energy always bounces around the room between us. We’re not interested in trends, gimmicks, or limitations. not without friends is the truest form of our combined creativity and us being ourselves.” The trio plans to explore every music avenue that catches their interest, and Alessi has urged fans to embrace discomfort, saying, “What you hear now isn’t necessarily what you are going to hear thereafter. The project is free, unrestricted, and ever-evolving. Keep an open mind when listening.”
“Not without friends – volume one” is now available and can be streamed on various platforms. So far, those who listened are impressed with the trio’s sound, and fans eagerly await the next volume
