Last night marked the first gig of the co-headline tour of the UK for two indie legends, Manic Street Preachers and Suede. This comes after the two bands toured Europe together back in 1993. They have since reunited, performing shows in the US last year and are set to return for joint dates in Japan this winter.
The bands will perform for approximately 75 minutes each night, taking it in turns to play the finale. For the Llangollen International Eisteddfod 2024 show, Manic Street Preachers closed the night with their hit ‘If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next’.
Prior to the tour, Manic Street Preachers frontman James Dean Bradfield promised fans a “banging greatest hits set – as simple as that”. They did not disappoint, and played hits from every era of their 40-year career.
In a recent interview with NME, Bradfield reflected on the joint 1994 tour, when the Manics were promoting their third album ‘The Holy Bible’. He also praised Suede and their guitarist Richard Oakes, stating “I remember just looking at them and thinking, ‘Wow, are they going to survive after losing Bernard?’ Because he was such a brilliant guitarist and musical architect. He had that chemistry of writing with Brett and left big shoes to fill. I remember being obsessed with ‘Dog Man Star’ (1994) when it came out, which is such an amazing album that I used to listen to all the time.”
The tour will head to Dublin next week (July 5), before playing Cardiff, Edinburgh, Manchester and Leeds. It will wrap up in London’s Alexandra Palace Park on July 18
