A devastating explosion destroyed a home in Willington, County Durham, leaving a man in his 40s in critical condition and his dog dead. Grace Porter, who lived next door with her two daughters, was not at home at the time. She woke up to several missed calls from the police and saw a headline saying there had been an explosion in her street. Fortunately, her family was due to move out that day but they lost all their possessions. Durham Police is investigating the cause of the blast, which is still unknown.
Ms. Porter said it had been pure coincidence that she was not at home when the explosion occurred, and her children were with their father. The family had an emotionally straining few years, and that house was their temporary housing, which she had worked hard to make homely. She told reporters that the devastation of all three houses hit her hard, as there was glass and debris everywhere, electrical cables in the garden, and personal belongings were scattered all around.
The community came to their aid, and Ms. Porter’s sister set up a fundraising page to help support the family, which has reached almost £3,000. Ms. Porter said people from all over the region had contacted her with offers of help, bags of clothing for the children, shoes, and much more. She added that when they get back on their feet, they would give as much back as possible to help others. In the meantime, she is grateful to everyone who has helped them through this ordeal.
The incident has left Ms. Porter in shock as she tries to navigate how to tell her children, not only that their neighbour is unwell, but that they have lost all their possessions, including the family’s pet dog, and is immensely grateful to the people of the community for their support. Durham Police confirmed investigations continue, and circumstances surrounding the explosion remain unknown
