As Glastonbury Festival gears up for a weekend of music, pop star Dua Lipa is set to headline the first night, following warm-up shows in Croatia, Germany, and France. Lipa’s opening set will include hit tracks such as New Rules and Levitating, with the star aiming to recreate the energy of clubbing at a venue that can hold up to 150,000 fans. The show will include “incredible surprises and some unexpected moments,” according to the singer’s record label boss, Max Lousada.
Other headliners for the festival include Coldplay, SZA, and country star Shania Twain, who caused a stir when she declared she wanted to “ride a horse to the stage”. However, festival organiser Emily Eavis turned down that request, citing the wellbeing of the animal in question. The festival includes much more than just music, with activities such as poetry, comedy, and even pottery throwing on offer.
The festival’s co-founder, Sir Michael Eavis, made an appearance on The Park Stage, singing covers of Frank Sinatra’s My Way and Elvis Presley’s Suspicious Minds to an enthusiastic crowd and received a warm reception from fans, who chanted “we love you Michael” between songs. This year marks the first time in Glastonbury’s history that the festival will have two female performers at the top of the bill, with Eavis expressing her passion for achieving gender balance across the lineup.
Lipa last played at Glastonbury in 2017 before releasing her breakout song New Rules and become a seven-time Brit Award winner. After being offered the headline slot last November, Lipa explained that headlining the festival had been on her bucket list since recording her first album in 2018. “It’s the greatest place on Earth. The sense of community, togetherness, and taking care of one another. It’s just beautiful.” Lipa’s set will be broadcast outside the UK via a BBC livestream
