A couple who have been attending Glastonbury Festival for the last five years have become engaged during an interactive theatre show involving performance artists from the Ministry of Happy. Maria Lawrence, 34, was tricked into wearing a blindfold as part of the show before her partner, James Wilson, 36, got down on one knee. “I woke up this morning and looked at my hand to check the ring was still there. It felt like such a blur,” Lawrence said. The couple, who have not disclosed any plans for their wedding, said Glastonbury was the “perfect place” for their engagement.
Wilson planned the proposal after securing tickets in a resale in November. The couple had been part of a large group of friends attending the festival when they came across the Ministry of Happy in the Theatre and Circus fields, who were dressed in bright yellow. Lawrence said she tried to push one of her friends into the show but was pushed into it herself, unaware of what was about to happen. “After they took the blindfold off I opened my eyes and they glazed over for a second. I thought ‘what is happening, he’s on his knees?’ I looked up and saw my friends crying,” she said.
A resident of Weston-super-Mare, Wilson said Glastonbury was the perfect place to propose because of the couple’s many special memories of the event. Wilson told the BBC: “Glastonbury brings us together, we always have a good time there. It just felt like the perfect place to do it.” Lawrence said that despite their shared love of live music, the couple had no concrete plans for their wedding, it would likely have a festival feel to it.
The event was not the first time a proposal had been made at Glastonbury, which is due to return in 2022. In 2017, artists Alex Pelling and Lisa Gant became engaged at the festival after visiting 58 countries together
