Over 500 creatives and entrepreneurs from around the globe have responded to the call of the annual Redesign Everything Challenge by creating sustainable designs to combat the climate crisis. The ethos behind the initiative is to encourage bolder ideas that tackle the plethora of environmental challenges we face.
Eleven winning products have already been showcased, including The Revival, a social enterprise run by Yayra Agbofah, that is focused on tackling textile waste in Ghana. The organisation saves items from landfill through upcycling programmes that promote education, awareness and art. Agbofah believes in creating a personal relationship between people and their clothes, highlighting the pride that comes from understanding the upcycling process.
The Reef Rocket, another winning product, was designed to solve the problem of declining oyster populations in New York’s iconic harbor. The structure is shaped like a spaceship and made from a unique “concrete” that includes plant enzymes and discarded oyster shells. Once placed in the water, it allows oysters to attach themselves to the structure and continue to grow. The hope is that this will replenish New York Harbor’s rapidly diminishing oyster populations and improve water quality.
The Redesign Everything prizes encourage creatives and entrepreneurs from around the world to think outside the box when looking for sustainable solutions that will address the challenges we face. These innovative, eco-friendly designs could be crucial in providing a greener future for all of us.
The winners of the Redesign Everything Challenge’s annual competition will have the chance to be presented in Amsterdam on 5 July, exposing them to the world and providing the opportunity to network with other leading innovators
