Thursday’s front pages were mainly dominated by the final TV debate between Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer before the upcoming elections. The Guardian described the debate as “tetchy”, with Sir Keir accusing the Conservative party of having “culture at the top” following the election betting scandal. The Times focused on Sunak’s tax warnings about Labour’s leader, while Sir Keir accused the Tory leader of being out of touch with the UK. The Daily Telegraph warned voters “not to surrender to Labour” and criticised Labour’s policies. The Daily Express also focused on the small boats crisis, highlighting Sir Keir’s inability to answer how his party would tackle the issue, while the Daily Mail tackled illegal migration, criticising Labour’s “nonsensical” plans.
The Daily Mirror, a newspaper known for traditionally backing the Labour party at general elections, didn’t feature the TV debate on its front page. Meanwhile, Constance Marten was shown on the front of the Metro following the convictions of her and her partner Mark Gordon. The pair were found guilty of hiding the birth of their baby, who was found dead last year after a seven-week search.
On the Financial Times, a teaser graphic of a $100 bill was used to introduce an investigation, revealing that a new global money laundering network had emerged between Chinese underground banks and Mexican drug cartels. The lead story focused on the upcoming French election, where the Rassemblement National party leader was “convinced” about securing a parliamentary majority in the snap elections later this month. The i newspaper, on the other hand, focused on a recent poll that stated Nigel Farage’s Reform Party’s support was dipping, potentially giving hope to the Tories. The front page also included a message that the paper will not be backing any political party in the upcoming election, or any election in the future.
Finally, the Daily Star followed up on a recent photo that made it to a few front pages on Wednesday, showing an England fan sleeping during the Three Lions’ 0-0 draw with Slovenia in Cologne. The tabloid interviewed him for its Thursday edition, where he claimed he had a dream that England was winning, and then woke up
