Missing Jay Slater donations to be used to help search efforts

The crowdfunding appeal for missing 19-year-old Jay Slater will be partially withdrawn to help fund the search for the teenager in Tenerife. Slater disappeared on 10 June and has not been seen since. His mother, Debbie Duncan, said the money, which has so far raised £36,000, would be used to support mountain rescuers, who have been unable to locate the apprentice bricklayer. Duncan thanked the public for their support and donations, but reiterated that the family and Slater’s friends have not given up hope.

Slater was last seen leaving the tourist resort of Playa de las Americas in the south of the island with two British men. The teenager’s last known location was a path in the mountainous Rural de Teno national park. Slater’s family and friends have been working with the crowdfunding site to withdraw part of the funds, which had been safely stored, to help pay for accommodation and food expenses. Duncan also plans to use the funds to fly in supporters to help sustain those involved in the search.

Spanish authorities, backed by drones, helicopters, search dogs and mountain rescue teams, have been unable to find Slater, whose phone was reported to have been at 1% battery. The Guardian Civil police declined offers of support from their British counterparts, stating that they had the resources required to carry out the search.

The painful wait for Slater’s family and friends continues, but they will keep searching for their missing friend until he is found
