Sheryl Crow slams Drake for AI-generated Tupac vocals on ‘Taylor Made Freestyle’

In a new interview with the BBC, musician Sheryl Crow has voiced her opinion on the use of AI in music, particularly in relation to Drake’s song, ‘Taylor Made Freestyle’, which used AI-generated versions of late rappers Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg. Crow described the use of AI as “a slippery slope” and “a betrayal” that goes against humanity’s core values. She stated that the technology is “antithetical to the life force that exists in all of us” and suggested that Drake’s use of AI to create a track featuring deceased artists is both “hateful” and disrespectful.

In addition, Crow spoke of her own experience with AI-generated vocals, recalling a track she heard last year which featured the vocals of John Mayer. She was “terrified” and “literally hyperventilating” upon hearing the song, noting that she could not tell whether it was actually Mayer singing or not. This example, in addition to another recent instance where a duet was created between long-dead artists Maria Callas and Freddie Mercury, raises questions about the future of music production and whether AI-generated works will one day replace live musicians altogether.

Drake’s song featuring the AI-generated voices of Tupac and Snoop Dogg was met with legal action by Tupac’s estate, who issued a cease-and-desist letter to the rapper. The song has since been removed from all streaming services and social media platforms. This incident represents just one of many in the ongoing feud between Drake and fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar, with each artist releasing diss tracks targeting the other in a back-and-forth dispute
