Emma Roberts says ‘nepo baby’ criticism ignores “all the rejection along the way”

Emma Roberts, famed for her role in the popular show American Horror Story, recently discussed her perception as a ‘Nepo baby’. Speaking on the Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi podcast, Roberts admitted that her family connections helped her in the industry, but that it wasn’t all easy sailing. As is the case with many successful people, fans only tend to observe the victories and not the failures that often come beforehand. Roberts makes a point of discussing the roles she auditioned for but didn’t get, stating, “It’s important to talk about – otherwise people just think everything’s been so great and linear and easy, and no, it’s not at all. But of course, it looks like that to the outside perspective or to the naked eye.”

Roberts’ father is the actor, Eric Roberts, and her aunt is actress Julia Roberts. In her interview, she discussed how people tend to only see it as an advantage, but it can often be a disadvantage, too, citing the need to prove oneself more. Robert’s reminded the audience that good experiences with the famous people in a family are critical to getting a shot in the industry. She demonstrates her perception of nepotism by referring to acclaimed actor George Clooney, hinting that men don’t get the nepo baby treatment in the same regard as women. Singer Lily Allen spoke out against the term nepo baby and called it sexist, and Roberts agreed, saying, “I feel like young girls get it harder with the nepo baby thing.”

Despite her family connections, Roberts had to work hard to establish herself in the entertainment industry. She started acting at nine years old, and her filmography includes movies such as Wild Child, Nancy Drew, and American Horror Story. She reminds us that there are always successes and triumphs alongside rejections and challenges, and that’s undoubtedly true in her case as well. Nepotism aside, Roberts’ talent and hard work have gotten her this far, and we look forward to seeing her future performances
