David Fincher is reportedly remaking ‘Squid Game’

Reports suggest that US filmmaker David Fincher is producing a remake of the popular South Korean series, Squid Game, for Netflix. While neither the acclaimed director nor the streaming platform have confirmed the news, it is said that he has been attached to the project, which he began working on two years ago, with writer Dennis Kelly. Squid Game, a dystopian action-filled drama, premiered last year, immediately becoming a pop culture sensation, spawning a reality show, and an upcoming second season.

Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s CEO, had earlier this year shut down rumours of an American Squid Game remake, calling them unfounded. He did this while in South Korea to visit the Netflix offices. However, on Fincher’s part, The Playlist reports that he began working on a Squid Game remake shortly after it premiered. If the rumours are true, this, however, would not be the first endeavour of its kind for Fincher. The acclaimed filmmaker has produced a range of successful TV shows, including Netflix’s critically acclaimed psychological thriller, ‘Mind Hunter.’

Squid Game’s second season is scheduled to release in December this year, with fans excited to see the continuation of the story. The series premiered in 2021 and was widely acclaimed by critics. While the show’s final sequences left some viewers wanting, many praised it for its sharp social critiques, suspenseful competition, and sympathetic characters. Fincher’s most recent project, The Killer, also received acclaim upon its release, scoring a four-star review with many considering it another hit from the director of cult-classics such as Fight Club and Gone Girl.
