Taylor Swift has made a significant donation to Cardiff Foodbank, enabling the charity to purchase a lorry filled with food and the items that are most needed for emergency food parcels. The donation, which according to the charity is the largest it has ever received from an individual, will provide the weight equivalent of providing three meals per day for 1,200 people for three days – a total of 10,800 meals. Swift has also donated to food banks in other US cities, as well as to cancer charities.
Cardiff Foodbank CEO Rachel Biggs said the donation will allow the charity to “lift our heads and shift our focus from the food bank to the creation of a sustainable operation supporting people who currently need our help with support to address the root cause of poverty… financial support to set them on the path to not needing our aid any more”. Rich Jones, CEO of St Andrew’s Community Network in Liverpool, which runs 11 food banks, said Swift’s donation would fund food donations for a year. “Taylor Swift has essentially paid our food bill for 12 months,” he added.
Global superstar Swift is one of the richest and most powerful women on the planet, recently entering the billionaire club following the huge success of her Eras tour. It has been estimated that this year she will earn around $2bn through this and other revenue streams, not taking account of royalties or sponsorships. The singer frequently donates money to charity, in addition to giving the proceeds from various songs, such as Welcome to New York and Wildest Dreams, to specific causes.
