British campaign group Led By Donkeys showed a video message on the White Cliffs of Dover to support the Justice4Windrush campaign. The message was about Squadron Leader Sidney McFarlane’s experience with racism and prejudice in Britain since he was invited “to help rebuild the mother country.” The objective was to appeal to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Labour leader Keir Starmer ahead of next week’s UK general election.
The Justice4Windrush campaign seeks to educate the public about the Windrush generation’s history and put pressure on the Home Office to resolve the Windrush scandal. The campaign is supported by several artists such as Craig David, Don Letts, AJ Tracey, and Karen Gibson MBE. The campaign’s slogan is “Don’t let the Home Office get away with it.”
The Windrush Scandal involved the British government forcibly deporting hundreds of British citizens of the Windrush generation, stripping them of their rights and wrongfully detaining them. The government’s “Hostile Environment” policy put the responsibility on the NHS, landlords, banks, employers, and others to make the UK “unliveable for undocumented migrants.”
Although the government has reviewed its migration policy, allocated funds for compensating victims of the scandal, and offered an apology, justice has not been served. Over 50 Windrush victims died while awaiting their compensation, and just 6% of eligible victims have received compensation, according to the Justice4Windrush website. The campaign reminded everyone that the victims continued to live under the threat of detention and deportation
