Residents in Renfrewshire have been advised that it’s safe to go outside after being told to stay inside following a fire that broke out at an electronic waste facility on Sunday evening. The Enva facility in Linwood caught fire following numerous loud explosions which were heard by residents in the area. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service advised residents to avoid the area if possible, but as of Monday morning, local residents can now open their windows and doors. No injuries were reported, with five fire engines still dealing with the fire.
The SFRS spokesperson stated that all five engines are attending Burnbrae Road to extinguish the fire. Local residents are asked to avoid the vicinity if possible but no longer need to keep windows and doors closed. An eyewitness previously told the BBC that he initially believed that the explosions heard were just people setting off fireworks, with Scotland playing Hungary at Euro 2024. However, when he looked out the window, he noticed a massive plume of smoke and quickly identified that something was wrong.
A previous fire took place at the Enva site in 2022, but a spokesperson has claimed that the current fire hasn’t affected any other areas of the facility, including their Linwood general waste recycling facility. The Enva facility will, however, remain closed until the emergency services cordon is lifted. Burnbrae Road remains shut, as does the cycle path that runs behind the industrial estate.
The industrial estate is less than four miles from Glasgow Airport; however, the airport has claimed that flights are not affected by smoke from the fire. The reason for the fire is still unknown, and the investigation is ongoing
