Robert Eggers, the director of horror films such as The Witch and The Lighthouse, has released the first trailer for his latest film, Nosferatu. Starring Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgard, the movie portrays a “gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake”. The film is a reimagined version of F. W. Murnau’s 1922 classic.
In the trailer, Depp’s character can be seen making desperate pleas as a hand grabs her throat and a blood-curling scream is heard. As Nosferatu arrives, terror is unleashed, and the trailer warns the audience to “succumb to the darkness”. Along with Depp and Skarsgard, the film stars Willem Dafoe, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, and Simon McBurney.
Speaking to Empire magazine about the movie, Eggers confirmed that it is a scary, gothic horror film, and that “the majority of audiences will find this one to be the case”. He described the film as “even more Ellen’s story than previous versions”, with Depp giving a “phenomenal” performance.
Eggers’ previous film was The Northman, a Nordic epic that received five stars from NME. Nosferatu will be available to watch in UK cinemas from January 3
