Mobile phone footage depicting the moments after journalist, Lyra McKee, was shot has been presented in court during the trial for her murder. The video shows a woman running towards a crowd at Central Drive in Londonderry’s Creggan estate shouting “there’s a kid shot in the head up there”. The footage was emailed to the Police Service of Northern Ireland following the murder in April 2019. McKee was observing a riot in Creggan when she was killed. Three men from Derry are accused of her murder, with seven others facing charges including rioting and throwing petrol bombs. All defendants have pleaded not guilty.
The non-jury trial is ongoing in Belfast Crown Court. The accused of her murder are 23-year-old Jordan Devine from Bishop Street, 56-year-old Paul McIntyre from Kells Walk, and 35-year-old Peter Cavanagh from Mary Street. The seven co-defendants on trial include Joseph Barr, 36, of Sandringham Drive; Jude Coffey, 26, of Gartan Square; William Elliott, 57, of Ballymagowan Gardens; Joseph Campbell, 23, of Gosheden Cottages; Patrick Gallagher, 32, of John Field Place; Christopher Gillen, 43, of Balbane Pass, and Kieran McCool, 55, of Ballymagowan Gardens.
Observers hope the use of the mobile phone footage will assist in finding justice for McKee, who was a well-known journalist in Northern Ireland. McKee’s murder caused public outrage and drew attention to the misuse of firearms in Northern Ireland. The trial has been closely followed by those seeking accountability for her death
