Billy Murray: Former kickboxing champion reveals cancer diagnosis

Billy Murray, a four-time world kickboxing champion, has been battling stage four bowel cancer for the last four years. Having seen both his parents die of cancer, he initially feared he would suffer the same fate. Murray chose to keep his diagnosis private until the release of a documentary covering his life which was recently released.

Belfast filmmaker Jim Crone was inspired by not only Murray’s sporting journey, but also his positivity and resilience in dealing with his illness. The film highlights not only Murray’s kickboxing career but also his work with Peace Fighters, an organization he founded to promote peace and respect through combat sports, as well as his work mentoring other athletes.

While the focus on training helps Murray with his determination to get through treatment, his motivational qualities are also not lost on those he trains, including two-time former world amateur kickboxing champion and professional kickboxer Jay Snoddon, who describes Murray as his hero and has been inspired by his career highs and lows.

Murray’s story is one many can learn from, as bowel cancer can present itself in various ways. Symptoms include blood in your stool, unusual changes in bowel movements, lower tummy pain and bloating, and excessive fatigue. If these persist for three weeks or longer, then doctors recommend visiting a GP to receive a diagnosis. Catching these symptoms early increases the chances of successful treatment.

Murray’s story shows that positive resilience in life can lead to success despite challenges. Fighting through cancer, Murray hasn’t allowed his illness to prevent him from giving back to the community. With his mentoring and continued work with Peace Fighters, he continuously provides support to the sport and people he loves
