Fans, peers react to Charli XCX and Lorde’s ‘Girl, so confusing’ collaboration: “I cry listening to it now”

‘Girl, so confusing’, a new version of Charli XCX’s song featuring Lorde, has become a hot topic among fans and peers. The song was released as part of Charli XCX’s critically acclaimed sixth studio album, ‘Brat’, which debuted at number two on the UK Albums Chart. Lorde praised the album on Instagram, calling Charli XCX a “bitch” and the remix sparked high anticipation among fans, who sensed a “relationship” between the two singers through the original version’s heavy and cryptic allusions to it. Charli previously admitted to being “super jealous” of Lorde’s success, explaining that “it couldn’t have been me because we’re completely different people”.

Charli began unveiling the remix on her Instagram account, promoting the collaboration by painting a wall promoting the album with Lorde’s name, before sharing a snippet of the New Zealand singer’s verse. The full song, titled ‘The girl, so confusing version with Lorde’, was then released. Fans have reacted positively to Lorde’s verse, with many considering it a deeply resonant look into the complications of female friendship and the experience of living with anorexia.

The artist Caroline Polachek took to Instagram to post a picture of herself with a promotional poster of ‘Brat’, captioning it with the lyrics “i ride for you charli”. Marina, another artist, gushed about the song, calling Charli’s album “iconic” while praising it for “mak[ing] work about this topic” and “healing to listen to it”. Charli herself, in response to the outpouring of positivity, tweeted: “well.. the internet went crazy!”.

‘Brat’ was given a four-star review by NME, which described it as “pure party girl hedonism” with “brash synths, left-field production, percolating beats and vocal lines that flit between bratty quips and honest one-liners”. By collaborating with Lorde, Charli has added another dimension to the song, receiving critical acclaim and stirring much anticipation among fans around the world.
