A family statement released on Sunday via Liverpool Football Club’s website confirmed that former Liverpool defender and football great Alan Hansen has been discharged from hospital after being seriously ill. The statement expressed the family’s gratitude for the love and support they have received during Hansen’s time in the hospital saying that the well wishes “had helped enormously.” The statement added that the family requested privacy as Hansen continues to recover at home.

Hansen, 69, spent 14 years with Liverpool, where he won several major trophies, including eight First Division titles, three European Cups, and two FA Cups. Hansen is in the top 10 for all-time appearances for Liverpool, having played 620 games in his career. He also earned 26 caps for Scotland during his time as a professional footballer.

After retiring from playing football, Hansen moved into sports punditry and worked on BBC’s Match of the Day from 1992 until 2014. A number of colleagues and fans expressed their support and concern for Hansen when Liverpool Football Club announced that he was “seriously ill” on June 9th.

One of his former colleagues, Gary Lineker, tweeted that Hansen’s recovery was “the best news ever.” The football community has been rallying to show their support for Hansen, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders of all time.
