Various political leaders have criticised Nigel Farage’s recent comments stating that the West provoked Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Rishi Sunak, the UK’s Prime Minister, called Farage’s comments “completely wrong and only plays into Putin’s hands,” whilst Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer described them as “disgraceful,” and Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey called Farage “an apologist for Putin.” The SNP also stated that it was an “insult to all Ukrainians who have suffered.”
During Mr Farage’s recent BBC Panorama interview, he claimed that the expansion of the EU and NATO had given President Putin a reason to claim that the West was “coming for Russia again.” He stated that whilst the war was “of course” Putin’s fault, the West had provoked him. These comments were heavily criticised by political peers across the spectrum.
The UK’s Prime Minister also described Farage’s comments as “dangerous for Britain’s security.” He went on to say that “this kind of appeasement is dangerous for Britain’s security, the security of our allies that rely on us, and only emboldens Putin further.” This is amidst a backdrop of allegations of Russian interference in UK politics.
Farage’s comments come just before the upcoming general election campaign, where Farage’s party, Reform UK, is gaining ground on the Conservatives in the opinion polls. Farage has recently announced that he aims for Reform UK to become the official opposition to Labour, which he believes will gain power on 4 July. However, polling suggests that the party may only win a handful of seats at this election
