Legendary musician Prince’s iconic 1984 album ‘Purple Rain’ is receiving a new audio-immersive Dolby Atmos re-issue to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Provided by NPG Records and Paisley Park Enterprises in partnership with Warner Records, the music is already available to stream via selected streaming services.
‘Purple Rain’ was recorded by Prince and the Revolution, and was released a few weeks ahead of the film of the same name. The album dominated the US charts for almost half a year, selling more than 25 million copies globally, and won recognition at the Grammys, Brits, and Oscars. Chris James, a frequent collaborator with Prince, mixed the Atmos version from the original master tapes, and a Blu-ray version for audiophiles will be released later in the year.
Additionally, a newly restored 4K version of ‘Purple Rain’ the movie is also being released, with a limited theatrical run starting from July 3. Celebration 2024, a gathering of Prince fans at his iconic Paisley Park Studios in Minnesota, will also run until Monday (June 24). Live performances from the likes of The Revolution, The New Power Generation, Morris Day, and others take place there.
Moreover, the Tony award-winning Orin Wolf is reportedly set to produce a stage musical of ‘Purple Rain’. In earlier news this month, Prince’s sister, Tyka Nelson, spoke about her final exchanges with Prince, sharing information about his similarities with their father. Prince passed away due to an accidental fentanyl overdose at his 65,000-square-foot estate in Chanhassen, Minnesota, Paisley Park, in 2016 at the age of 57.
The singer’s Minneapolis house, which appeared in ‘Purple Rain’, is available on Airbnb for a year. Additionally, Prince’s rarity B-side ‘United States of Division’, which blasts the US-Iraq war, has been released to honor the 20th anniversary of his 2004 album ‘Musicology’
