Hamish Linklater has been named the new voice actor for Batman in the upcoming Amazon Prime Video animated series, Batman: Caped Crusader, following the death of Kevin Conroy earlier this year. Conroy first voiced Batman in the 90s animated TV series, eventually voicing the character in over 20 different projects, including Rocksteady’s Arkham franchise. Conroy died in 2022 after a short battle with intestinal cancer, but has posthumously starred in Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League and MultiVersus.

Linklater, who has never done voiceover work before, expressed his excitement in an interview: “I never in a million bajillion years imagined that I would actually get the part. Not only had I never been cast to do voiceover work before this, but also—it’s Batman! You don’t go from zero to Mount Olympus,” Linklater said before adding that he “just ran and grabbed my kids and was just like, ‘Dad’s Batman!’”

Joining Linklater in the animated series are Cristina Ricci (The Addams Family, Yellowjackets) as Catwoman, Jamie Chung as Harley Quinn, and Diedrich Bader as Two-Face. The series has been described as a “re-imagining of the Batman mythology, through the visionary lens of executive producers J.J. Abrams, Mat Reeves and Bruce Timm.”

The series does not seem to feature Batman’s iconic nemesis The Joker, following Conroy’s death and Mark Hamill’s announcement that he would be stepping down as the voice of The Joker. Hamill paid tribute to Conroy, stating, “He was one of my favourite people on the planet, and I loved him like a brother. He truly cared for the people around him – his decency shone through everything he did. Every time I saw him or spoke with him, my spirits were elevated.”
