The search for missing British tourist Jay Slater has been redirected to the north of the island of Tenerife after discounting a potential lead in the south. Slater, a 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer from Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire, flew to the island for a music festival. He was last known to have called his friend Lucy Law just before 9 am on Monday, saying he was lost, thirsty and had 1% battery left on his phone. The search operation, consisting of police, mountain rescuers, fire fighters and volunteers, has now entered its third day.
Slater was last seen at a rural property approximately a 40-minute drive from the festival. The terrain, described as harsh and barren, is a popular hiking area with sparse vegetation and small winding roads. The Guardia Civil, the island’s police force, and dogs and drones have joined the search; however, a helicopter launch was postponed due to uncooperative weather.
Slater’s mother, Debbie Duncan, has flown to the island and joined the search. She described her experience as “I’ve not slept at all, it’s like it’s not real.” A Facebook group set up by friends and family has attracted over 350,000 members.
The area has already undergone an extensive search effort which is now refocussing onto the rural area of Masca and surrounding areas in the north-west. Potential sightings initially suggested relocating the search to the LOS Cristianos area but these were subsequently discounted by the Spanish Guardia Civil.
