The London College of Communication is playing host to the final projects of this year’s MA documentary photography and photojournalism course. The show named ‘This Way Up’ was a result of the student’s two-year courses and showcases their unique and varied photographic language which includes deeply personal moments to those of a more global nature. The projects were shot in ten different countries and depicted different vital concerns of our time.
According to Aletheia Casey, the course leader, the students have developed in-depth and meaningful bodies of work “which not only push the boundaries of the photographic language, but also engage with vital concerns of our time.” One of the photographers, Lauren Morrison’s project 246 Flowers highlights the human toll of mass shootings in Texas and the influence of the National Rifle Association (NRA) on elected officials.
Meanwhile, Richard Wood’s Aktion T4 portraits the Nazi campaign of mass murder of German citizens with disabilities. Marcin Kornacki explores the ongoing socio-political turmoil in Haiti while Reem Baeshen’s handwritten letters and self-reflective collages examine who she is as a Muslim, mother, and a woman. Other subjects include psychogeographic wanderings in the Thames estuary and exploring the lives of people displaced due to gang warfare in Port-au-Prince.
The exhibition, which is part of Free Range 2024, runs at Truman Brewery in Brick Lane, London, until 23 June 2024
