The Kinks guitarist Dave Davies has spoken out after seeing his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame trophy listed for auction on eBay. The award, which was won by the original Kinks line-up in 1990, was listed with a starting price of $12,500. The Kinks reunited to attend the ceremony. It was the first time the group had performed together in many years. In a message on Twitter, Davies said that the listing had been made “without his consent”, but also revealed that he hadn’t known the location of the award for some time.
“I lost track of my award years ago and didn’t know where it was,” he wrote. “If the person bought it at a storage unit it may have been around the time of my 2004 stroke when I was incapacitated in [the] UK”. Davies suffered a stroke on June 30th 2004 and relearned the guitar after his recovery. Despite his concerns, Davies also revealed that he intends to try and retrieve the trophy.
““We’ve written to the seller and are waiting to hear back,” he wrote. “I don’t want to have to pay 12 grand to get my own award back. But maybe we can work something out more reasonable.” The company selling the award, Colony Records, reached out to Davies after the sale via Twitter, encouraging him to get in touch.
Davies’ comments come after a series of interviews with former bandmate Ray Davies in which the musician suggested that there was still a wealth of material for a new Kinks record. In addition, Davies said that he would only consider a Kinks reunion if the band was able to secure a “show that gives us the credit we deserve”.
The Kinks remain one of the most respected UK bands of the last six decades, with hits including “Waterloo Sunset”, “All Day and All of the Night” and “Lola”. The band’s classic era of fame lasted from the 1960s until 1970 however, personal and legal issues disrupted the band’s output during the 1970s. Although The Kinks never officially broke up, Run-DMC covered their song “You Really Got Me” in 1987
