Sushi artist Michelle Wibowo has unveiled an exhibition showcasing celebrity heads sculpted entirely from sushi. The West Sussex-based food artist spent 120 hours crafting portraits of well-known Brits, including singers Elton John and Ed Sheeran, and England footballers Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka, out of authentic Japanese sushi ingredients. Each work of art measured 18cm tall and 10cm wide. The sculptures were exhibited at London’s CasildART Gallery as part of World Sushi Day celebrations.
Wibowo, who has previously made headlines for her sugar models of Queen Elizabeth II, Prince William, and Hogwarts Castle, said she was “used to creating sculptures from unconventional materials, but working with sushi ingredients was a whole other kettle of fish.” She noted that it was fascinating to see how traditional sushi ingredients such as sushi rice, smoked salmon, and pickled ginger could be used to create intricate facial features and hair.
The exhibition also featured sushi sculptures of TV presenter Alison Hammond and actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Lorraine Kelly. Wibowo expressed the hope that people would find her celebrity sushi sculptures as amusing as she did. While the exhibition lasted for just one day, it certainly left an impression on visitors.
Wibowo’s innovative use of food as a sculptural medium has made her a draw for food lovers and art enthusiasts alike. Her sushi sculptures provide a fun and unique way to experience familiar celebrity faces, highlighting not only Wibowo’s creativity but also the flexibility of sushi as an artistic material
