Disgruntled voters will vent their frustrations at all politicians during the upcoming UK general election, says Welsh Secretary David TC Davies. Despite opinion polls indicating a significant lead for the Labour Party, Davies believes there is little cause for optimism among voters. “I think people are really quite concerned,” he said in an interview. Challenges over the past five years, including the pandemic and the Ukraine-Russia conflict, have left people feeling “battered”. He argued there was also a “sense of instability” in the Middle East and that people were “not at all happy” with the political situation in Wales.
Davies accepted that the polls offered the Conservatives grim reading. Although they were not always accurate, polls were “clearly pointing at a large Labour majority”, he admitted. “You cannot dismiss every single opinion poll.” He also agreed with the suggestion that Keir Starmer was likely to become prime minister if the numbers were accurate. A lot of people would vote Labour merely because it was “the least worst option”, he suggested.
Davies also spoke about the “lot of disgruntlement in Wales” with the Labour government there. He was unsure where voters would go in the upcoming election, given the apparent disillusionment in Wales and the opinion poll numbers. He made the comments to the Sun newspaper’s online politics programme Never Mind the Ballots.
