John Caudwell, the billionaire founder of Phones 4U, has revealed that he will be voting for the Labour Party for the first time ever next month, despite having donated £500,000 to the Conservative Party in the last election. Caudwell has described the current Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, as an “absolute dud” and praised the Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer’s handling of various issues. Although Caudwell disagrees with some of the policies put forth by the Labour Party, he believes they are the best party for Britain to move forward with. 

Caudwell has been an increasingly vocal critic of the Conservative Party in recent months, particularly of UK prime minister, Boris Johnson, his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and Rishi Sunak. Caudwell has also been critical of the focus on “extreme socialist policies,” instead of creating a “wealthy Britain”, though he’s praised Sir Keir’s attempts to rid the party of what he called “the loony Left.”

While he had previously ruled out backing Nigel Farage’s Reform UK over its stance on climate change, among other issues. Caudwell stopped short of saying he would donate to the Labour Party, but added, “it is quite possible” in the future “if I think they have done an amazing job.”

Finally, he has criticized the Conservative’s policies to create growth, while committing a lack of focus on environmental policies. He believes environmental policies are key to having a world to look after and GDP growth is necessary to fund social services
