Young Thug’s lawyer arrested mid-trial for alleged contempt of court

Brian Steel, the lawyer for the rapper Young Thug, has been arrested for alleged contempt of court. Steel refused to reveal his source for an alleged conversation involving Judge Ural Glanville, leading the attorney to be held in contempt on Monday, June 10. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Steel has been sentenced to 20 days in the Fulton County Jail, which he will serve on weekends. He was also ordered to begin his sentence on Friday, June 14. However, Steel has been granted an emergency bond by the Georgia Supreme Court and will remain out of custody while his appeal, which is still pending, is heard.

Reports indicate that Steel was held in contempt following an alleged conversation that occurred between Glanville, witness Kenneth Copeland and prosecutors. Copeland was supposed to testify that Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffrey Williams, had rented a car with the intent to murder Donovan ‘Peanut’ Thomas, who is said to be a member of a rival gang. Copeland himself was held in contempt last Friday, June 7, for suddenly refusing to testify, despite being granted immunity.

Steel reportedly learned about the meeting that allegedly took place and suggested that Copeland may have been intimidated or coerced ahead of taking the stand on Monday. When pressed to reveal who he had heard the conversation from, Steel refused to tell Glanville, arguing that he should have been involved in the conversation himself. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the conversation became increasingly hostile until Glanville held Steel in contempt and ordered him to be taken into custody.

Steel then called for a mistrial, saying that it was removing him against his will and that it was taking away Williams’ right to counsel. Glanville eventually allowed Steel back into court, on the condition that he would reveal his source by 5pm. Steel did not reveal his source, and thus his contempt charge still stands.
