Martin Scorsese, the iconic film director, is set to film a documentary about ancient shipwrecks in the Mediterranean Sea. Interestingly, the documentary will take Scorsese to Polizzi Generosa, a small town on the Italian island of Sicily where his grandparents, Teresa and Francesco, were born. The town only has a population of over 3,000 and sits within the Madonie mountains.

The documentary is currently untitled and will be based on research by archaeologist and professor at Cranfield University in England, Lisa Briggs. According to reports, the film will analyse the DNA on recovered artifacts from the shipwrecks, offering details about the crews and their cargo and providing insight into the lives of the sailors on board.

While it remains unknown when the film will be released, some sources have revealed that “shooting is expected to start this summer,” and that joining the production team will be The Irishman’s Chad A. Verdi.

The small town of Polizzi Generosa is also the birthplace of Dolce & Gabbana co-founder Domenico Dolce. The initiative has been welcomed with enthusiasm by Francesco Paolo Scarpinato, Sicily’s councillor for cultural heritage who stated, “Sicily’s authorities are making all pertinent site and archaeological parks available, considering the relevance of the project.”
