Tom Morello on collaborating with his son on his first solo rock album: “I have a guitar player there who may be giving me a run for my money”

Tom Morello, the legendary guitarist of bands such as Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave, and Prophets of Rage, spoke with NME at the Download 2024 festival about his forthcoming single ‘Soldier In The Army Of Love.’ The track is set to release on June 28 and features Morello’s son Roman on guitar. The song is the first single from his first-ever solo rock album.

At an intimate show in Camden, just before his set at Download, Morello played songs spanning his career, including tracks from Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave, Prophets of Rage, and more. When asked about the show, Morello stated “It was an electric affair. It’s such a historic ballroom and I think we put one on the books there.”

During the interview, Morello spoke of his experience collaborating with his son, Roman, on the new track. Roman, who is just 13 years old, has been practicing guitar for eight hours a day during the pandemic. Morello says, “I’ve been relegated to being the rhythm guitar player in my family as I have a shredding prodigy now who’s really giving me a run for my money.”

When asked about the difference between working as a solo artist compared to being in a band, Morello described the purity and creative control that comes with making a solo album. He also spoke of the chemistry that comes with being in a band and how the combination of talents can create something unique.

Morello finished the interview by discussing his plans for the future and his excitement about rocking audiences across Europe for the next month and a half. After that, Morello is heading home to finish his new record. Fans can pre-save ‘Soldier In The Army Of Love’ now
