Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has shared details of a cycling accident he was involved in while in the US, urging his followers to always wear a helmet. In a video posted to social media, the star lifted his chef’s whites to show substantial bruising on his torso, requiring hospital treatment. He shared a before and after photograph to his Instagram profile depicting significant damage to his helmet, which he said “saved” his life. Despite being “a bit bruised up”, the 57-year-old admitted he “did not break any bones or suffer any major injuries”.
The chef shared his experience ahead of Father’s Day, addressing the message to “all the dads out there”. He stressed the importance of wearing a helmet, telling his followers that “if I didn’t, honestly, I wouldn’t be here now”. Ramsay emphasised that even for short journeys, wearing head protection is crucial. “They’ve got to wear a helmet,” he added, particularly when cycling with children.
Ramsay thanked the trauma surgeons and nurses at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in Connecticut, where he was treated. In the video, the chef appeared shaken while explaining the “really bad” experience he had gone through. “It’s been a brutal week. And I’m sort of getting through it,” he said. The video has since been viewed millions of times, with many praising the chef for using his platform to encourage safe riding practices.
Ramsay serves as a figurehead for the National Headway charity, which focuses on brain injury prevention and support to those affected by brain trauma. Following the accident, Ramsay has urged his followers to support Headway, highlighting the dangers of brain injury as a result of accidents such as his. The chef himself will no doubt be nursing a few bruises, but the mishap has not been enough to stop him from promoting healthy and safe lifestyles
