Comedian Sue Perkins has issued an apology after accidentally misgendering actor Emma D’Arcy during a red carpet interview. D’Arcy is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns. During the interview, Perkins referred to D’Arcy as “she”. However, D’Arcy’s co-star in the forthcoming television series House of the Dragon, Matt Smith, subtly corrected Perkins’ mistake by calling D’Arcy “they” and praised D’Arcy’s work.

Perkins has since made a statement on her official X account, acknowledging the mistake and apologising for being unfocused during the interview. She wrote that she had “loads of stuff” going on in her earpiece, adding that “these things matter and I feel terrible about it. Am a massive fan of their work and would never want to be disrespectful”. Another user on X responded to Perkins’ post, saying that they doubted Perkins would misgender D’Arcy on purpose and that mistakes are made when people are not given guidance on people’s pronouns.

The second season of House of the Dragon, which is a Game of Thrones spinoff, is due to be released this week. The co-star praised D’Arcy’s performance in the upcoming series. The first episode of the new season, named ‘A Son For A Son’, is set to be released in the US on June 16 and for UK viewers at 1am on June 17
