REM reunite for their first interview as a band in 30 years

CBS will air REM’s first group interview in 30 years tomorrow, June 13th. The quartet, consisting of Michael Stipe, Bill Berry, Peter Buck, and Mike Mills, have reunited specifically to speak about their recent induction into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame. In a clip shared on CBS’ social media accounts, the band members discussed what their induction into the Hall of Fame means to them, with Peter Buck stating, “We lived and died on the strength of our songs, so this is a huge honour.” Meanwhile, Mike Mills added, “it is the hardest thing that we do and it’s the thing that we’ve worked on most from the very beginning.”

This isn’t the first time the group has reunited recently; back in February, REM reunited during a tribute gig celebrating their debut album, ‘Murmur.’ In one fan-shot clip, Stipe told the crowd, “Speaking on behalf of Bill and Mike and Peter, we are so ****ing thrilled to be here tonight.” REM broke up in 2011, with Berry leaving the band in 1997, though he would reunite with the group a few times in the 00s. Mills has said that there are still “plenty of vault songs” that have yet to be released by the band.

Despite their recent reunion, Peter Buck and Michael Stipe have both said that the band’s split was permanent, with Stipe stating last year that they would “never reunite.” However, fans can tune in tomorrow to watch the group together in their first interview in three decades
