The annual Portrait of Humanity award has released its shortlist, showcasing a range of emotional and profound images of our society. These images are said to capture the strength and beauty of humanity, and are a testament to the resilience of local communities even in the face of great adversity. This year’s competition features moments from across the world, with unforgettable snapshots of life in war zones and football pitches, and the plight of Afghan refugees. Shortlisted from an initial 8,000 entries, the award celebrates our shared struggles while raising awareness for the crucial issues such as climate change and freedom of choice.

British Journal of Photography stated that the action unfolds to try to understand human emotions, the diversity of cultures, and communities at a time of growing turmoil. The 200 shortlisted images reflect a call for unity and highlight the shared human fight against pressing issues that include the environment, freedom of choice, and the right to love. These struggles push the human race – despite the conflicts amongst them – to stand stronger and united.

Celebrating London’s football scene, the photographer Sam Riley captures the unique story of Iqra Ismail, a director of Hilltop FC, which welcomes players from underrepresented groups, including Muslim women. Fraternidad 100% Salay Filial Londres, a folklore troupe of three women in London also features, while the Skateistan project in Afghanistan involves the education of more than 2,500 children, aged 5 to 17, through skateboarding.

The images that comprise the Portrait of Humanity Vol. 6 shortlist – including those above – are published by Bluecoat Press in a book. This continues to celebrate the unification of all cultures and individuals despite current turmoil.
