Dave Myers, one half of the popular cooking duo The Hairy Bikers, has been posthumously awarded the freedom of Barrow, his hometown. Myers passed away in February at the age of 66 after a battle with cancer. His passing led to a tribute ride, dubbed Dave Day, which saw 20,000 motorcyclists travel from London to Barrow to celebrate his life.
The Barrow Town Council granted Myers the highest honour it can bestow in recognition of his service to the community and promotion of civic pride. The award was presented to Myers’ widow, Lili, who said she “wasn’t expecting it at all” and that it was “such a huge honour… what a proud moment”.
Myers and his partner Si King found fame on their Hairy Bikers TV show two decades ago, where they travelled the UK and the world on their motorbikes, sharing and cooking different dishes. King addressed the crowds at the end of Dave Day in Barrow, saying “You’ve made David Myers very proud”.
The freedom of the town is the highest award that a town council can bestow, with the wording on the scroll presented to Myers’ family stating: “We loudly applaud your valuable and sterling service whilst thanking you most sincerely”
