Red Velvet, one of South Korea’s biggest K-pop girl groups, have revealed that they are set to release a new mini album titled Cosmic later this month, according to their label, SM Entertainment. The announcement was made on the group’s official account on X (formerly Twitter) on June 10 at midnight KST in a press statement from the label quoted by Newsen. The announcement revealed that Cosmic will feature six songs that take influences from “a variety of genres” and the album’s release date is set for June 24 at 6pm KST.
The band’s third studio album, Chill Kill, was released seven months ago. NME’s Tanu I Raj described the record as “deliciously dark, delightfully macabre” with the group “spinning chilling tales with flawless harmonies at the centre”. It scored a glowing four-star review, however it’s not any concrete information that tells us if Cosmic will have any connections to the band’s earlier work.
Red Velvet’s album announcement follows member Joy’s comments on June 3 in which she expressed her concern over the lack of confirmation and promotion for their upcoming music. Meanwhile, earlier this year Red Velvet’s Wendy dropped her sophomore mini-album titled Wish You Hell, which marked her first solo release since her debut mini-album, Like Water, in 2021.
Fans of the K-pop genre will be excited about the news of the new album to add to their collection, with Red Velvet having cemented their place in the history of the scene with hits such as Psycho and Bad Boy. Most recently, fellow K-pop girl group aespa impressed with their daring experimental style showcased on their album Armageddon. Nevertheless, the anticipation for Cosmic grows.
Red Velvet has been around since 2014 and boasts a legion of loyal fans worldwide, with the success and influence of K-pop on the global music industry only increasing over the past few years. The band’s unique sound and style have undoubtedly contributed to their success and enduring appeal, as has their passionate fan base known as “Reveluvs”
