This year’s London Trans + Pride event will take place on July 27, following the success of the march in 2023, with an estimated 40,000 people in attendance. The march is now in its sixth year and will be a celebration of trans, intersex, gender nonconforming, and non-binary individuals’ lives. The event organizers will also use the march to call for trans+ rights and stand in solidarity with individuals from countries such as Palestine, Sudan, Haiti, and Congo with the slogan: “None of us are free until all of us are free.”
The founder of Trans + Pride, Lewis G. Burton, believes that the rights and freedom of trans+ people are commonly disregarded. Burton stated that “Justice and Liberation is seemingly sought out by all, however more often than not does not include trans+ people. The lives of a minority group (around 0.5% of the U.K. population) are routinely questioned, delegitimized, ridiculed, gate-kept and used as divisive, political pawns.” Last year, around 25,000 people attended the march.
According to the event organizers, this year’s focus is celebrating the lives of trans, intersex, gender nonconforming, and non-binary individuals. The event aims to raise awareness and shed light on the issues such individuals face, from healthcare to workplace discrimination. Encouraging society to value trans+ rights and providing a platform for marginalized communities is an essential aspect of the march.
The theme of this year’s Trans + Pride event targets inclusivity and equality, but more needs to be done to protect and support trans individuals and other minorities that face discrimination. The event’s solidarity with countries facing crisis and acknowledging their struggles is admirable, but changes in governmental legislation and societal attitudes are essential to achieve full inclusivity and freedom for trans+ people worldwide
