Actor Jeremy Strong has said he feels it is time to officially leave Succession in the past. The popular HBO show explored the sometimes tumultuous lives of the Roy family, who owned a global media empire. It ran for four seasons and concluded last year, but fans have held out hope for more. Actor Brian Cox, who played the matriarch Logan Roy, previously hinted he would be open to returning for a Succession movie if the script was good enough. However, Strong has now said in a recent interview that he does not see himself reprising the role of Kendall Roy in the future.
“I’m sure there’s a desire for more [Succession]. I would really pass that buck to Jesse Armstrong,” he told People. Armstrong is the show’s creator. “But I think in terms of the role that I played, he came to his terminal point. So for me, that’s something that is very happily put to rest.” Strong played the eldest son of Logan Roy and won a number of awards for his performance, including a Golden Globe and an Emmy. Succession itself won 19 Emmys, nine Golden Globes and a Grammy.
Despite this, the end of season four seemed to offer appropriate closure for most fans. The season was named as the second-best television show of 2023 by music publication NME, which said the decision to end with that season was ultimately inspired. “At its best, Succession managed to evoke not sympathy – come on, that would be ridiculous – but at least a pang of sadness for these awful multimillionaires,” the publication said. “The scene where Logan told his offspring that they weren’t “serious people” was utterly devastating because it was both cruel and deserved. Never less than rambunctious and riveting, this final season also offered a welcome reminder that the 0.1% are just as messed up as the rest of us. They just behave so much worse.
