After the recent D-Day commemorations, Nigel Farage has received criticism for his comments regarding Rishi Sunak’s early departure. Farage stated that Sunak’s decision signalled he is not in touch with the British people and failed to grasp the importance of patriotism in the country. Sunak, who apologized for his early departure, faced backlash from MPs including Farage.
Mel Stride, a Conservative minister, responded to the criticism leveled at Sunak by stating that Farage’s remarks were “deeply regrettable” while shadow justice secretary Shabana Mahmood said the comments signalled a “dog whistle.” Stride went on to show support for Sunak, claiming that he was aware of his mistake and genuinely cared about issues veterans face.
Although he condemned Farage’s comments, Keir Starmer, Labour leader, suggested that Sunak had questions to answer regarding D-Day events. Starmer and many other world leaders, including US President Joe Biden, attended the international commemoration event on Omaha Beach, while the British event in Ver sur Mer was attended by Sunak, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and King Charles.
