The Greek island of Symi has been shaken after the discovery of a body during the search for TV and radio presenter Dr Michael Mosley. The 67-year-old disappeared last week after going for a walk from Agios Nikolaos beach. The as-yet unidentified remains were found in a rocky area adjacent to Agia Marina beach over the weekend. Local officials say the body was located during a search of the coastline, assisted with cameras. Police sources have confirmed the body had been dead “for some days”.
According to the Agia Marina bar manager Ilias Tsavaris, the location where the body was eventually discovered had already been searched with helicopters for several days. Greek authorities had mobilized an extensive search and rescue effort for Dr Mosley that involved police, firefighters, dogs, drones, local volunteers, and even those who had travelled to Symi from outside the island in an attempt to find Mosley who was a well-known public figure. Mosley’s wife Dr Clare Bailey Mosley and their four children were reportedly on the island at the time of the search.
Mosley studied medicine in London and went on to enjoy a long career as a presenter, author, documentary maker, journalist. He was known for his work on such programs as Trust Me, I’m A Doctor, Just One Thing podcast, and had made appearances on both This Morning on ITV, and BBC One’s The One Show. Dr Mosley also writes a column for the Daily Mail.
The discovery of the body has cast a pall over the island as officials await the results of forensic testing to confirm if the remains belong to Mosley. The investigation is ongoing, and local authorities have declined to make any further comment until the identity of the deceased has been determined
