Actor Benedict Cumberbatch recently shared his playlist on Spotify in a new interview with NME’s Alex Flood. Among Cumberbatch’s recently played tracks was Elbow’s new album ‘Audio Vertigo’, which he praised and described as a “constant fun and reinventing” band. The actor also gave a shoutout to Polish cellist Dobrawa Czocher and her upcoming release ‘Dreamscapes’, calling it the “most extraordinary use of the cello as a percussive instrument”.
Cumberbatch also revealed that he uses music to get into the headspace of his characters when preparing for a role. “It’s such an immediate language, music, it’s such a brilliant non-verbal way of understanding a character,” he said. His recently played tracks on Spotify also included U2’s ‘Achtung Baby’ reissue, Max Richter, Jon Hopkins, Blur, and Noah Kahan, among others.
Cumberbatch is currently starring in Netflix’s six-part psychological thriller ‘Eric’ as Vincent, a puppeteer father whose son has gone missing in New York. The show is available in full on the streaming service now. In a three-star review, NME wrote that while the show doesn’t shy away from the actor’s aloof nature, it “becomes confusing viewing” as it fails to display the innocent glee one would expect from a show involving children’s puppets.
Cumberbatch’s love of music has been well documented over the years, with the actor also serving as host of BBC Radio 2’s ‘The First Time with…’ series in which he interviews different musical guests about their lives and careers
