HBO’s much-awaited series, “House of the Dragon,” returns to screens next week, and the early reviews suggest it will be a hit. The show’s second season will go out weekly from June 16, ending on August 4. Its return is based on the 2018 book “Fire & Blood” by George R.R. Martin and is set almost 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones.” The four-star reviews for season two have been mostly positive.
A recent trailer for the new season has built upon the tension that highlighted the end of the previous season, as characters butt heads over who will claim the Iron Throne. The trailer sees The Blacks led by Rhaenyra and Daemon plan an invasion of King’s Landing to claim the throne from the Greens, led by Aegon. Over the course of the intense trailer, we get several glimpses of the bloody and fiery war to come, along with a trip to The Wall.
The “House of the Dragon” received high acclaim during the first season and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama. The show stars Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Rhys Ifans, and others. In a review of the first season, NME wrote: ‘What is reassuring is that “House of The Dragon” feels as though it is walking on solid ground: the bubbling rivalries, the jostling for power, the eruptions of violence, it is all coming together to create a rich stew…it is a relief to see a prequel that seems to know what it’s doing. A decent watch for fans and neutrals alike.’
Not all the reviews were positive, as some critics slammed the characters as “thinly-defined” and “interchangeable.” Despite that, it appears that “House of the Dragon” is a prequel that will not disappoint, offering a deep, satisfying dive into the show’s main characters
