Actor Jake Gyllenhaal has opened up about his experience as a legally blind actor in Hollywood, saying that he thinks it has been beneficial for him. Born with a lazy eye that was naturally resolved, Gyllenhaal has been wearing corrective lenses since the age of six and remains legally blind. However, he says that he has never known anything else and that his condition has allowed him to be with himself when he cannot see without his glasses.

The actor has previously spoken about how his vision has impacted his career. While filming a scene in the 2015 boxing film “Southpaw” where his character is told his wife had died, Gyllenhaal said he took off his contacts, believing it would make him listen more carefully and access the appropriate emotions.

Gyllenhaal recently starred as bouncer and ex-UFC fighter Elwood Dalton in the remake of the 1980s cult classic “Road House.” He played the part first made famous by Patrick Swayze and appeared alongside Conor McGregor and Billy Magnussen. The film marked Amazon Prime Video’s biggest-ever movie debut, with over 50 million people watching it in its first two weeks of streaming.

Gyllenhaal also made headlines for his strict dietary regimen while preparing for “Road House,” which meant he could not eat even while filming an eating scene. He is set to star in the lead role in Apple TV+’s new legal thriller miniseries “Presumed Innocent,” which is scheduled for streaming on June 12th. The series also stars Ruth Negga and Bill Camp and follows the story of a prosecutor who becomes the prime suspect in the murder of one of his colleagues
