Actor Simon Pegg has voiced his criticisms of recent American films in the Godzilla franchise. Pegg shared his thoughts on Godzilla Minus One in a video uploaded to his Instagram Stories earlier this week. He recommended the film, calling it the best Godzilla movie since Shin Godzilla, which was released in 2016. Pegg praised the film’s creators as the original producers of the Godzilla franchise. He said: “It’s a proper Godzilla movie made by the people who sired Godzilla from their subconscious as they wrestled with the massive ramifications of what happened during the second World War. It’s not some rock ’em, sock ’em fucking cultural appropriation.”
Pegg followed up with a post recommending that fans watch the original Japanese version of Godzilla Minus One, rather than a dubbed version. The comments come after Netflix unexpectedly released the film globally on its platform last weekend. The film, which won the Academy Award for best visual effects earlier this year, is set towards the end of World War II, and sees a devastated Japan mobilised by the arrival of a giant radioactive dinosaur.
Godzilla Minus One is the second Godzilla movie released in the past year, following Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The Hollywood-made franchise began in 1998 and has seen five films to date. After being rebooted in 2014 by Warner Bros, four Godzilla films and one King Kong film had been released. In a three-star review for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, James Mottram wrote in NME: “Naturally, there’s some next-level destruction as famous landmarks, including the Pyramids, get trashed. And while it won’t scratch an emotional itch, if it’s barnstorming building-bashing you want, then Godzilla X Kong delivers.”
