Poppy shares Madonna-meets-metal single ‘New Way Out’ and tells us how “there’s plenty to be angry about”

Poppy has spoken with NME about her new metal track ‘New Way Out,’ inspired by Madonna, and her experimentation with hardcore. She collaborated with Bad Omens and Knocked Loose and is injecting more whimsy into her music. ‘New Way Out’ is Poppy’s latest music release since her 2023 album ‘Zig.’

Poppy told NME that while her previous album was a dance-inspired piece, her new project’s goal is to bring a new level of intensity to her music. With her experimentation with metal starting in 2018 with ‘Am I A Girl?’, Poppy’s ‘Choke’ EP in 2019 and 2020’s ‘I Disagree,’ she calls ‘New Way Out’ uncharted territory.

Former Bring Me The Horizon member Jordan Fish and House of Protection’s Stephen Harrison produced the single. They went into the studio at the start of the year and rushed to finish the song before Poppy left for tour. The visuals for ‘New Way Out’ are also “more whimsical” than her previous music videos.

“Saving yourself is the overall message. You have to advocate for yourself sometimes,” said Poppy. While ‘Zig’ was one of Poppy’s more polished records, ‘New Way Out’ is one of the heaviest. ‘New Way Out’ is part of a more significant project, and not every track will have the same level of intensity
