Eric Clapton has expressed his admiration for Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters’ political outspokenness. Clapton was speaking during an interview with The Real Music Observer. Asked about opinions that musicians should “stick to music,” Clapton responded: “I don’t respond to the word ‘should’ very well. Anyone that tells me what I should be doing, I’m going to do the opposite.” He continued: “I love Roger… it takes a lot of guts, and he suffers from it terribly.”
Waters, a vocal critic of Israel’s policies toward Palestine, has been accused of antisemitism on several occasions. He’s denied the accusations, saying he’s critical of Israel, not Judaism. Last year, Waters’ concerts in Germany attracted headlines for their use of swastikas and other imagery casting Israelis as Nazis.
Fellow rock star Clapton, meanwhile, has been heavily involved in various political causes including a charity concert for Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s presidential campaign. The guitarist has also been a vocal opponent of COVID vaccines, revealed that he would refuse to perform at venues that required proof of vaccination, and even released an anti-lockdown song with Van Morrison.
In any case, Clapton expressed his belief that music is a “healing agent” and that he and Waters share a responsibility to be “responsible not to offend people.
