Iron Butterfly founder, lead vocalist, and organist Doug Ingle has passed away at the age of 78, leaving no surviving members of the classic lineup. The news was announced by his son, Doug Ingle Jr, in a Facebook post. “It’s with a heavy heart & great sadness to announce the passing of my Father Doug Ingle. Dad passed away peacefully this evening [May 24] in the presence of family,” he wrote. Ingle’s cause of death was not disclosed.
Ingle formed Iron Butterfly in 1966 in San Diego, California, together with drummer Jack Pinney, bassist Greg Willis, and guitarist Danny Weis. The band’s best-known lineup, however, featured Ingle, drummer Ron Bushy, bassist Lee Dorman, and guitarist Eric Brann, who passed away in 2003. Dorman died in 2012, while Bushy died in 2021. Ingle wrote some of Iron Butterfly’s biggest hits, including “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida,” which is often credited as one of the progenitors of hard rock and heavy metal music.
Ingle continued to write other classics like “Soul Experience,” “In The Time Of Our Lives,” and “Easy Rider” after the band split up in 1971. Although he occasionally toured with the band, with the most recent being in 1999. In 2014, rumors circulated that the band was creating a new album with Ingle’s son, but the album never came to fruition.
Iron Butterfly was a rock band that had a profound impact on the music industry, shaping the course of rock and roll for generations to come. Doug Ingle played an integral role in the creation of the band and will always be remembered for his contributions to the world of music
