Last night, Selena Gomez received the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in Emilia Pérez, sharing the prize with her co-stars Karla Sofia Gascón, Adriana Paz, and Zoe Saldaña. Directed by Jacques Audiard, the Spanish musical crime comedy follows the story of a woman tasked with aiding an escaped Mexican cartel leader to undergo sexual reassignment surgery. The film received a long standing ovation at its premiere on May 18 and won the Jury Prize, before being acquired by Netflix.
The win solidifies Gomez’s move away from music and full-time into acting. In January, she confessed to considering quitting music and focusing entirely on her acting career. Gomez is set to play veteran musician Linda Ronstadt in an upcoming biopic and will reprise her role in the Disney sitcom, Wizards of Waverly Place, for a sequel series. Nonetheless, the artist did release her flirtatious new single ‘Love On’ in February, which could be a taste of an upcoming fourth album that has yet to be revealed.
Earlier this month, Gomez pointed out her mental health issues and her choice to reduce her online presence, despite being the most-followed woman on Instagram. She recently opened up about the period she “hit rock bottom” with her mental health in a SXSW panel in Austin, Texas, and previously reflected on her 2022 documentary, My Mind & Me, which she debated releasing to the public. This year, Gomez also revealed herself as a Kurt Cobain superfan, adopting his hair and look and watching his interviews and performances excessively
