At the BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend, held in their namesake town of Luton, Coldplay made a touching tribute to the city’s football team, Luton Town FC. The team’s home colours are orange, which led to fans petitioning for the band to alter the lyrics of their hit single “Yellow” to reflect their local pride. While the band played “Yellow” unchanged, frontman Chris Martin introduced a new song as a token of their admiration for the Hatters. Titled “Orange,” the ballad celebrates the town with lines such as “I was born in love with Luton, and I’m always gonna be” and “We didn’t win all our matches, we didn’t win the cup / But when you get knocked down in Luton, you always get back up!”
The song was met with approval from both fans and the team itself, which tweeted, “Coldplay just said they love us ?.” This was not the only surprise during Coldplay’s set, as they also invited Sabrina Carpenter, who previously performed her own slot at the festival, to sing “Magic” with Martin. The band are set to headline Glastonbury for a record fifth time in June, alongside SZA and Dua Lipa, before moving towards a hiatus after their final album is released next year.
Frontman Martin has previously indicated that the band plans to stop writing original music as a group by 2025, although they may potentially continue touring and collaborating after that. “Our last proper record will come out in 2025 and after that I think we will only tour,” he told interviewer Jo Wiley. “Maybe we’ll do some collaborative things but the Coldplay catalogue, as it were, finishes then.” The band had previously stated in a 2021 interview with NME that they intend to create 12 albums in total, viewing it as a finite challenge that makes the intense nature of their work worthwhile.
In other music news, a trailer for the upcoming docuseries “Camden” has been released, featuring appearances from Martin as well as Noel Gallagher and Dua Lipa
